Look and Feel Great at Any Weight - You don't have to be a size 6 to be fit and fabulous!

"I am a size 14, I'm curvaceous, I work out every day, and I feel great," says Elaine Magee, MPH, RD, author of more than 20 books and a WebMD Weight Loss Clinic consultant.
And not only can larger-size women be healthy and feel terrific, they can look every bit as stylish as their size-6 friends, says full-figured supermodel Emme (who knows all about looking fabulous).
It is possible to have a body image like Magee's or Emme's - one that's healthy and positive - even if you aren't skinny.

Why, then, do so many full-figured women feel so bad about their bodies, even when they're at a weight that's healthy for them? And how can they, like Magee and Emme, start to like what they see in the mirror?
Several body image experts interviewed by WebMD offer practical tips for feeling good about your body.
And Emme has style hints that will help you dress to look your best.

Getting Over the Norm
"As we develop and grow, we begin to place a value on what we see in the mirror -- which is based on experiences but also on the cultural norm, with a thin body being the preferred type," says Kathy Kater, LSW, a psychotherapist in St. Paul, Minn., who specializes in body image and eating and weight disorders.

But the problem with the cultural norm in America is that human beings aren't meant to be one size or one shape.

"The research on body diversity is conclusive: Even if we all ate the same optimal, wholesome diet and exercised to the same high degree of physical fitness, we would still be very diverse in our shapes," says Kater. "Some are quite thin and some are quite big, but mostly in the middle."

Of course, she's not promoting obesity, which brings health risks. But many of us can be quite healthy even if we wear a plus size.
So how can you accept the fact that your body is meant to be a certain size - even if that size isn't skinny - and feel good about it?

First, accept the fact that big doesn't mean bad.

"The most common body image complaint for women, and increasingly for men, is the 'I feel fat' body-image distortion," says Kater. "It's a learned perspective that says to be bigger is a bad thing. But it's not! And actually, it's quite possible to be big without being unhealthy."

People of all sizes and shapes, explains Kater, should learn to define health by making healthy choices rather than by their size or weight.

In fact, if full-figured is your natural body shape, you're better off sticking to what you were born with than depriving yourself to reach what can be a dangerous goal.

"Everyone has a natural body weight," says Ruth Kava, PhD, RD, director of nutrition at the American Council on Science and Health in New York.
"If you have to starve yourself to get where you think you should be, you may be doing damage because you may not be getting appropriate nutrition."

That doesn't mean you should give up on a healthy diet -- or on exercise. In fact, the experts say, exercise is the key to good health and a healthy body image.

"Exercise always helps," says Kava. "It may not change your absolute body weight, but you will feel better about your body, improve your self-esteem, and improve your attitude."

But if you're a beginner, don't get carried away.

"If you're someone who doesn't exercise, you need to start slowly," says Kava. "And don't get discouraged, even when life intervenes. This is a lifelong commitment to yourself that you have to make."

Building a Better Body Image

What other steps can you take to boost your body image?

Make sure the people around you make you feel good about yourself, no matter your size. "If you are spending too much time with people who make you feel bad about your body,
maybe you need another social group," Kava says. "Get an exercise group together, be proactive."

Make sensible decisions about what you eat. "Make sure that you have a reasonably healthy diet," Kava tells WebMD. "If you need help deciding what's good and bad for you, get the help of dietician.
People splurge on facials and massages -- go splurge on a dietician."

Focus on the inside, and let your body take its natural shape. "You need to focus on eating healthy and exercising while working on what's inside of you and the way you feels about yourself," says Magee.
"In everything that I do, I promote the philosophy that you should eat and exercise for the health of it, and let the pounds fall where they may."

Choose positive role models. "Choose role models that help you feel good about who you are, rather than ones who make you feel bad," says Kater.

"If you're under stress, exercise is even more important to do, to dilute it and put it into perspective."

She's been named as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People" in the world by People magazine - twice. Ladies Home Journal chose her as one of the "Most Important Women in America" and one of the
"Most Fascinating Women of the Year." Biography magazine honoured her as one of the "25 Most Influential Women," and Glamour saluted her as "Woman of the Year."

Unlike most women we see in entertainment, she's not a size 2. And that's just fine with her.

How did Emme do it?

"The most important key I can give is to get interested in something outside of your home or apartment that gets your heart pumping, and you will see an incredible difference in your attitude and energy level," says Emme. "If you're under stress, exercise is even more important to do, to dilute it and put it into perspective."

And, of course, looking your best helps you feel great about yourself. That's where Emme's practical and easy style hints come in.

Emme's advice:

First, clean out your closet. If you haven't worn something within the last year, give yourself the license to chuck it!

Don't deny your body shape. If you do, you'll get frustrated with dressing and not see the wonderful options that are now available for your body type and shape.

Follow only the trends that suit you. Avoid trends that don't work for your body type.

Don't wear too many accessories or mismatched prints.

Go for shapely, figure-skimming silhouettes, not boxy clothes that cover up your body.

If you're a pear shape (narrow shoulders and wide hips), buy pants and skirts that are 1-2 sizes larger than you normally wear and have a tailor take them in at the waist.

Always buy one size larger than you normally wear to have a jacket, dress, or suit tailored to fit you. If you buy too small a size, there won't be enough material to work with.

Find good undergarments that help eliminate panty lines, and find bras that fit (75% of women wear the wrong size bra).
Also, pantyhose are making it back into wardrobes, so stock up on brands that make your legs feel great.

Dress for comfort and ease.

Look Good, Feel Better.

But before you rush off to purchase a chic new outfit, remember this:
Feeling good about your body begins by working on the inside, then focusing on what's outside.

"Don't get hung up on pounds and what size dresses you is wearing," says Magee. "Instead, focus on being healthy from the inside out, eat well, and exercise regularly.
And remember that you can be sexy and look fabulous and feel fabulous and not be thin."

Always remember this, "Really great people make you feel that you, too, can become great."- Mark Twain

Fashion Know-Hows

While nobody lives by fashion "rules", we do have pieces that flatter us more than others.
Deplorably, not that we are being crude but there are indeed some wear that a plus-sized woman should last think of.

Fashion mistake: "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."- Just because it fits you, doesn't mean you should buy it.
Does it really flatter you?
Don't just buy for the sake of adding an extra piece into your wardrobe.
Instead, search for what really compliment you and fit like a glove.

"Fashions fade, style is eternal."- Famous Designer Yves Saint Laurent
"Beauty comes in all Shapes, Sizes and Packages."- Mia Tyler
"Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after Style."- John Fairchild

There is the myth that plus size clothing needs to be baggy and totally style free. The myth is supported by the lack of fashionable plus size clothing for woman and teens.
However, with a multitude of celebrities preaching body acceptance, more and more brands are investing in the design of stylish women's plus size clothing.
Plus size clothing are no longer made like Muumuus meant to hide curves but rather today's plus size clothing styles flaunts a woman's curves flatteringly.

Yes, we understand the importance of playing with colors but we are sorry to say, not all colors compliment our curves well.
Even like the petite, they should try stay away from the Queen of color, BLACK!

You simply can't argue with the color black. It always looks classy and no one can ever tell if it's $50 or $5,000.

Black is sleek and chic. Glamorous and compliment our curves very well. It also helps to conceal flaws.

Your look is a celebration of who you are and all that you have to offer. It's like building a statement/ style that cannot be denied or duplicated.
It's the sum of everything about you- the accessories you choose, your hairstyle, your favorite perfume, the makeup you do and last but not least the way you dress.
For some people, a keen sense of fashion is innate. They instinctively know what looks good on them and what DOESN'T!
Luckily for the rest of us, it can also be developed.

Fashion Tips
Plus size women are beautiful and we come in all shapes and sizes.
What determines our body types, as outlined below, are the proportions of the bust, waist and hips.
Depending on body type will determine what type of clothing a woman should wear.

Diamond
Someone with a diamond body shape carries the majority of their weight around the middle where the waistline is not clearly defined. The hips are wider, but the shoulders and bust area are smaller.
What to wear?
To flatter a diamond body shape, you should wear clothing that will take the eye off the waist and make the shoulder area appear wider - shoulder pads, for example, and horizontal necklines.

Rectangle
Someone who has a rectangle body shape has no defined waist and the hips and bust are about the same size. From the shoulders down to the thighs looks straight up and down.
What to wear?
Someone with a rectangle body shape should wear fashions that will make the body appear curvier and creates the illusion of a defined waist.

Triangle
Those with a triangle body shape have shoulders and busts that are proportionally smaller than their full hips and thighs. Their waistline is defined.
What to wear?
The triangle body shape should wear fashions that will make the upper body appear proportionate to the lower part of their body: shoulder pads, lighter colors and wide necklines.

Oval
An oval body shape has no defined waistline but they do have a noticeable belly. The oval will have a fuller bust with slender arms and legs.
What to wear?
An oval will look best wearing that take the emphasis off their midsection but emphasize their hips, thighs and legs.

Hourglass
An hourglass body type has a defined waist that is smaller than the hips, shoulders and bust, which are similar in size.
What to wear?
The hourglass figure should wear open collars, v-necklines, and clothing that accentuate their curves.

Figure Eight
A figure eight body type is a combination of an hourglass, but with fuller hips and thighs like that of a triangle.
The waist is less defined, but the noticeable belly is present like that of an oval.
What to wear?
The figure 8 should wear fashions that will make the midsection appear longer and take the emphasis off of the fuller bottom.
Wearing open collars and v-necklines can help draw attention to the upper part of the body.

Inverted Triangle

With the inverted triangle body type, the shoulders and bust are larger while the waist, hips and thighs are smaller.
What to wear?
This body type needs to wear darker colors on the top and lighter colors on the bottom to help balance out the silhouette.

The 15 "Must-Haves"
Wardrobe essentials help you look great every day. You can mix and match them with other pieces to create a variety of looks.
For plus size women, it's important to plan your wardrobe around items that are versatile and figure friendly.
Here's a list to get you started in the right direction.

1. Foundation Garments:
What you wear under your clothes is just as important as the clothes you wear. Proper fitting bras, panties, shapers and hosiery help showcase your body in its best light.

2. Wrap Dress:
This classic looks great on practically every figure. It camouflages tummy bulge and hugs your curves in just the right way. The wrap dress is feminine, flirty, and always in style.

3. Wrap Shirt:
Get the same benefits you'd get from a dress in a top. Pair it with jeans, trousers or a skirt. Wear it to the office, or on a date. It's an all-purpose top with endless possibilities.

4. A-line or Flare Skirt:
These types of skirts have great shapes for plus size women. The silhouettes are waist trimming and thigh slimming. They work well for casual or professional wear.

5. Deep V-neck Top:
Deep v-necklines are a staple in plus size fashion. Wearing a deep v-neck makes the body look longer and leaner. Pair this top with a lightweight camisole for a great layered look.

6. White button-down Shirt:
Here's a wardrobe essential with staying power. You can't go wrong with a crisp white shirt for business, casual, or a night out on the town.

7. Blazer:
Not the bulky old school variety with shoulder pads and a boxy shape. Modern blazers have details that flatter and fit close to the body.
This wardrobe basic makes your layered looks polished and sophisticated. Choose a blazer in a neutral color for maximum versatility.

8. Jeans:
No wardrobe is complete without a great pair! These days jeans are practically all-occasion wear.
They can be dressed up or down, but some with dark washes and trouser-like fit can work for the office too.

9. Wide Leg Pants:
Trousers with wide legs create a flattering silhouette. They work well for every body type. So, add a few pairs to your wardrobe.

10. Black Dress:
The little black dress is a wardrobe essential for women of every size. It's classic, functional, and chic. Keep one in your closet and you'll always have something to wear.

11. Tunic:
Tunics are fashionable and comfortable. They come in a variety of styles and they are easy to wear. Use them to add color to your wardrobe.

12. Coat:
Not just a coat, but a figure-flattering one. Don't overlook your outerwear. Covering a great outfit with a shapeless coat can still make you look frumpy.
A classic trench is a good option, but it takes time to find a coat with the right fit for your body and your style.

13. Fashion Belt:
A Fashion Belt- It's not just for holding up pants these days, the right belt can take an outfit from blah to "WOW". A Wide Elastic Belts would do the trick.
Plus size fashionistas use them to define their waists, to add color and contrast to ensembles, and to express personal style. Include at least ONE in your wardrobe.

14. Fashion Bag:
When it comes to choosing a flattering designer handbag shape - its all about contrast! Just as the perfect pair of pants can make your legs look longer or your butt look thinner so can the right handbag.
The key to choosing a flattering handbag is to choose one that’s the opposite shape of your body type. For example, if you are short choose a long handbag; if you are thin choose a short, plump designer handbag. However, size is a different story and your purse or handbag should be proportional to your figure. If you are unsure about what type of figure you have, ensure you choose a purse that ends at the middle of your torso this purse length is universally flattering for most women.

Tall and Thin
If you are long and lean, you will be able to get away with almost any form of handbag. Clutches, oversized handbags and shoulder bags will suit you fantastically, but the size of the bag needs to be considered. Oversized, large bags are going to look best on you, whereas smaller ones are going to make you look even taller than you already are. If you want to purchase a smaller handbag, make sure it fits snugly under your shoulders.

Short and Plump
Shorter girls need to pay very careful attention to the types of handbags they choose. Smaller bags tend to look best since larger ones will overpower you and make you look even shorter. Shorter purses (especially those which fit tightly against your body) will create height and make you look taller than you really are.

Curvy
If you’re lucky enough to have an hourglass figure you will want to accentuate your waistline. In order to do this, you will need to find a bag which hits just above the waist. This style and length is going to be most flattering. Medium sized bags work best to enhance your already gorgeous body type.

Plus Size
If you’re plus size you will definitely want to stay away from small bags, which tend to make you look bigger than you are. Bags with short straps should also be avoided. Try a style which is larger and slightly wider than normal sizes since they will make you appear smaller.

The type of handbag you choose will not only depend on your body type, but also on the outfit you’re wearing and what you are doing. Choose your handbags according to how you feel that day and what you think looks best on you. One handbag is never enough, so make sure you have a number to choose from. You wouldn’t wear the same pair of shoes everyday, so why carry the same handbag?

15. Heels:
Get a lift. Heels make you look taller. They make legs look stronger and butts look higher.
The heels don't have to be super high either. Even at just ONE inch boost, it will help you look slimmer.

The ultimate high-heel survival guide

Step One: How to shop for heels

The first step to surviving high heels is selecting the right ones. If you’re a high heel newbie, don’t opt for five inch stilettos. You have to choose what’s comfortable (yes, high heels can be comfortable!). If you feel like you might fall, don’t buy the shoes unless you know they’re reserved for an evening where you’ll be seated most of the time. Or, try a platform instead because they’re easier to walk on. Before you swipe your card and bag them, walk around the store with both shoes on. You need to be absolutely positive that the to-die-for Carrie Bradshaw heels don’t hurt your feet or squeeze your toes. Another key point: buy the right size. If you don’t have at least a half inch between your big toe and the toe of the shoe, try going a half size up. Your footsies will thank you for it. When it comes to the comfort of a well-made shoe, price is not always the most important detail (unless you’re trying on a pair of Louboutins or Manolos). Splurge a little more if you can afford to because good shoes are less likely to hurt your feet or cause back pain.

Step Two: How to wear high heels
Now that you’ve got the right shoe, you have to learn how to wear it properly. Lesson one: never attempt to wear a brand new high-heeled pair of shoes to the office. Eight hours in a tight new shoe isn’t always comfy. Wear them around the house first and break them in, then move on to wearing them to a party or out for dinner. When you finally do wear them to the office, bring a pair of flats to wear on your way home. Another comfort tip is to add heel cups or insoles. You can also try comfort pads and place them under the balls of your feet to help absorb shock. Anti-friction products might also be useful because they will prevent your shoes from irritating your skin. High heels are usually slippery underneath, too so try an anti-slip pad. It’s a thin sticker with a rough surface and it will keep your shoes from slipping and sliding. There’s absolutely nothing elegant about a woman in high heels, sprawled on the floor after an embarrassing wipe out.

Step Three: Care for those footsies
If you want your feet to love your shoes then start by loving your feet. Give yourself a foot massage and try soaking them in warm water regularly. Get rid of hard, dead skin with an exfoliating stone file. Follow with a moisturizing balm or even a foot scrub or mask. Slide on a pair of slippers when you’re done to keep your feet protected. After eight hours in five inch heels, they deserve it, don’t they?

The 7 Common Plus Size Fashion Mistakes
The plus size fashion industry offers a variety of great clothes.
The problem is that many full-figured women don't know which clothes flatter their bodies and where to find them.
So, they make fashion decisions based on magazines, other people's opinions, or negative feelings about their figures.
Here are 7 of the most common plus size fashion mistakes and ways to avoid them.

Mistake 1- Hiding the body- Extra weight makes many women feels self-conscious. Full-figured women often try to de-emphasize their curves.
They wear clothes that are boring or ill-fitting, so as to not stand out.
Solution: Make your curves an asset rather than a liability. Avoid pieces that are too big or too tight. Wear clothes that skim the body and emphasize shape.
Focus on silhouette instead of size.

Mistake 2- Ignoring or being unaware of body shape- All plus-size bodies are not the same. What works for one curvy gal won't necessarily work for the next.
Solution: Learn what works for your body type, know your proportions, and dress accordingly.

Mistake 3- Clinging to a certain size- Many plus-size women will only buy clothes in the size they think they wear. Unfortunately, that size doesn't always fit.
So, they give up on an item that could be perfect for them.
Solution: Be flexible. Sizing in plus-size fashion varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Think of your size as a range rather than a specific number. Go up or down as needed.

Mistake 4- Focusing on trends- Trendiness has its place, but it should not dictate everything you wear.
Buying every "it" item on the market doesn't contribute to building a great wardrobe. These pieces have short shelf lives and are often unflattering.
Solution: Develop your personal style. Invest your time and money in quality clothes that showcase your figure and your personality.

Mistake 5- Shying away from color- It's a well-known fact that the black has a slimming effect. So, many plus-size women become overly dependent on the color.
Their wardrobes quickly become drab and boring as a result.
Solution: Use color to your advantage. Choose hues that match your skin tone. Wear them in a way that balances your proportions. Try the monochromatic look.

Mistake 6- Shopping offline only- There is an abundance of specialty shops that carry plus-size women's clothing. Department stores also have sections for plus-size women.
However, the variety and caliber of clothes available in these stores isn't always great.
Solution: Shop online too! The internet has revolutionized the plus size fashion industry. Many of the best plus size fashion lines are only available online.
You have to become a little net savvy to find the best of the best.

Mistake 7- Shopping too infrequently- Wardrobe building requires adding new pieces regularly and getting rid of old ones.
If you only shop every few years, then chances are that you haven't accumulated what you need and that what you do own is likely outdated.
Solution: Advances in plus size fashions are constant. Add pieces one or two at a time. Shop at least every other month to keep your wardrobe functional and current.
